Target Audience for My Music Magazine
What genre of music magazine are you going to be constructing?
I am not going to focus on one specific genre of music in my magazine, I will choose 2/3 genres which are most popular. I will then balance type of music artists that feature in my magazine so that people who are interest in different genre still want to purchase and read the magazine. The genres that I will mainly focus on will be R'n'B, Hip-Hop and some Alternative music too.
Will it be for a mainstream or niche audience?
Is it similar to any existing products or is it going to be different?
The music magazine is going to be similar in the type of features it produces but that's it for the similarities as it is going to be a unique and different product in comparison to existing ones out there already. My magazine is going to be original as it is going to cover a diverse range of music; including news and tips about popular gigs and festivals across Europe. Also it will cover lots of exclusive interviews and news from music artists and bands rekindling and also the upcoming new talent!
There age range will be predominately from 16-24 year olds, but teenagers a couple of years younger may also be interested in the magazine. Also there may be adults up to 30 who will enjoy reading this magazine and may appeal to them.
Who will the core reader of your magazine be? What artists do they like? How do they dress? Where do they shop? What products do they own or aspire to own? How do they spend their time?
In my magazine there isn't going to be a definitive 'core' reader as I want my audience to be diverse as possible. They will like popular artists of the time, mainly coming from the 'Hip-Hop' and 'R'n'B' genres, such as; Drake, Jay-z, Rihanna, The Weeknd, Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean etc.
They wear the latest fashions and buy there clothes from the high street and online shops too such as Topshop, Urban Outfitters and Zara for girls/women. For men they would most likely shop in Urban Outfitters, Size and Street Wear designers. They are mostly into the latest trainers from shops such as Offspring; wearing trainers mainly made by Adidas, Nike and Converse.
They will aspire to own the latest technology such as smart phones, tablets and laptops. They will want to be able to own a flashy car and a large house when they are older. Clothes wise most of them will want to be able to more expensive designed clothes and accessories that they see their favourite music artists wearing.
My audience will include college/sixth form students, university students and young working adults. They spend the majority of their time studying and working during the day. In the evenings; they may go to the gym as young people are infatuated by the way they look these days, enjoy eating out or having a take-away, and at the weekend most young people go out to bars and clubs where they listen to music and consume alcohol. Some of my audience won't be into clubbing and will prefer going to see live music acts and be a 'festival go-er'. They will also spend a proportion of their money on shopping and if they're a girl - cosmetics and maintenance such as having their hair/nails done.
Who will be your primary and secondary audience?
My primary audience is going to be the 'core reader' which will be students and young working adults. This means they are not going to have a very high disposable income and the majority may not even have jobs due to their studies. This means I need to think carefully when I decide the price of the magazine as if I price it too high then they won't be attracted to buy it.
The secondary audience of my magazine is much broader and widespread. Anyone may read the magazine including teachers, brothers, sisters, friends, colleague; anyone who is up to the age of around 30 years old will read this magazine.

What will be the gender mix?
Both male and females will read this magazine as it will appeal to both. I will make sure that my colour scheme look unisex so it doesn't put either of them off buying it, also I will make sure that I feature artists and bands that appeal strongly to both the male and female audience. Also articles not music-related will appeal to both genders such as 'Money Saving Tips Whilst at University'.
What will be the socio-economic mix?
My primary audience will mostly come from Group E as the majority of them will be students. The rest of my core audience will come from of the other groups C1C2D, with an exception of AB as they are fairly young and unlikely have a high up job such as a profession/managerial because they wouldn't have enough experience. Also they are more likely to come from those groups and group E as it will fit in with there earnings and lifestyle due to the price and content of the magazine.
I know this because I have carried out detailed and textual research and analysis of existing music magazines already out there and looked a Media Press Packs of famous music magazines such a 'Q' and 'NME'. I have also used the 'National Readership Survey' website to help me further in finding out different demographics of my potential audience. These demographics include:
- Gender
- Age
- Ethnicity
- Class and status
- Languages spoken
- Disabilities
- Mobility
- Home ownership
- Employment status
- Location
